Jack Cardiff était cinématographe directeur et photographe…

 

Né le 18 septembre 1914, il commença très tôt dans ce monde idyllique qu’est le cinéma au commencement des films muets et gravis;es échelons jusqu’aux premières esquisses de « » Technicolor » » et même a touché au fameux « » Smell-O-Vision» » ou si vous aimez mieux le fameux « » Scratch and Sniff» » qui avouons-le a connu un succès plutôt éphémère.

Il fera cette ascension jusqu’à son apogée dans le monde du plateau du 21e siècle. Il a laissé sa marque en influençant le cinéma autant que les Powell  Huston  Hitchcock et autres. En 2000 il recevra l’ordre de l’empire Britannique et un oscar honorifique en 2001 pour sa contribution au cinéma.

Revenons en arrière, né a Great Yarmouth à Norfolk Angleterre il vient d’une famille d’artistes, ses parents faisaient du music-hall et lui-même commença comme acteur dans un très jeune âge dans les music hall et les films muets : My Son MY Son(1918), Billy » s Rose (1922), The Loves of Mary Queen of Scots (1923) et Tiptoes (1927). À l’âge de 15 ans il devient assistant caméraman , applaudisseur et coureur de production pour British International Pictures incluant le film d’Hitchcock « » The Skin Game (1931).

En 1935 il devient opérateur de caméra et occasionnellement cinématographe travaillant la plupart du temps avec “” London Films” ». Il a été le premier à filmé en Technicolor en Angleterre pour le film “’Wings in the Morning” » (1937). Quand la guerre débuta il devint cinématographe dans les films d’information publique.

Le tournant de sa carrière fut dans la deuxième unité de caméraman dans la production de “’Powell & Pressburger”’ le film “’The Life And Death of Colonel Blimp”’ (1943), les producteurs ont tellement été ravis de son travail qu’ils engagèrent Jack Cardiff comme cinématographe dans la production après guerre de Technicolor “’A Matter of Life and Death”’ (1946).

La collaboration continua avec “” Black Narcissus (1947) qui rapporta un oscar et un Golden Globe à monsieur Cardiff et aussi la production ‘’The Red Shoes’’ (1948). Ces films mirent jack en grande demande dans le milieu du cinéma et les gros budgets commencèrent à entrés.

Vers la fin des années cinquante Cardiff commença à dirigé deux succès modestes ‘’Intent to Kill’’ (1958) et ‘’Web of Evidence’’ (1959). En 1960 son adaptation du livre de ‘’D.H. Lawrence’’ ‘’ Sons and Lovers’’ mettant en vedette Trevor Howard et Wendy Hiller et Dean Stockwell fut un franc succès. Le tout lui rapporta 7 nominations pour un oscar et gagna le prix ‘’ Freddie Francis’’ pour la meilleure production cinématographique en noir et blanc ainsi qu’un Golden Globe pour la direction du film.

Peu après il dirigea tout un mélange de différentes productions dans une carrière hors du commun. Après avoir fait de la direction dans les années soixante il retourna à la cinématographie dans les années soixante et dix et les années quatre-vingt. Il aura contribuer à plus de 141 productions au cours de sa prodigieuse carrière. Il rendra l’âme le 22 Avril 2009 à l’âge honorable de 94 ans de mort naturelle. Merci Jack!
